Today, we will be introducing the series of discussions by answering the question: is our world really safe? I will be using, as my reference, one of the greatest historical books ever written. It is the bestseller of all times and is called The Holy Bible

To answer this question I’m going to take us back to the beginning of the Bible. The Bible has 66 books. I will go to the first book called Genesis. Genesis means beginning. The Bible, as we know it today, is made up of 1,189 chapters and, of these, there are only 4 chapters that are perfect; 4 chapters that have peace: 4 chapters that describe our world as a peaceful world. The rest of the chapters of the Bible describe the reality of what is currently going on in our world.

In chapter 1 of Genesis the Bible tells us how God began the creation of the earth.   Genesis 1:1-5 “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.  And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.” Let’s read the last verse of Genesis chapter 1, “And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.” So this chapter shows us that there was peace on the earth. Everything was very good.

Let’s go to Genesis chapter 2, “Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.” Again we see that the earth was very good. The earth was so good that God rested. God was satisfied with everything. Everything was okay. There was peace everywhere. There were no wars. There was no fighting. Everywhere was safe.   In verses 7-10 the Bible tells us how God created the first man. “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed. And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads.” These verses are describing a garden. That is an organized place! In this garden God placed the first man He created. He put him there. All the food he needed was there. Let’s go to verses 15-17, “And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.  And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” So God showed the first man He created every fruit and every tree that was good for him and also showed him the one that was not good for him. In verse 19 the Bible says, “And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.”  God sent animals into the garden for Adam to name them. So Adam was able to name all animals. This included the wild animals. And, obviously, none could attack him. There was serenity everywhere. Even wild animals behaved like domestic animals. All the animals were named by Adam. He was able to do this because there was no chaos on the earth. The world was a safe place. Verses 21-25, “And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.” Adam and his wife Eve were naked. They were the only humans in this garden and yet, because everywhere was peaceful, no wild animal attacked them. They didn’t fall sick. Everything was okay. The world was a safe place. They could sleep anywhere and wake up anywhere.

So we just read the first two perfect chapters of the Bible. But as we read Genesis chapter 3, we are going to see the source of the problems of the world. Everywhere you look in our world today, you will find that our world is not really safe. You can hardly stay in a house or even a hotel room without locking the door. Everywhere you go people lock their cars and doors. Why? Because the world is not safe! In every country in the world, there are over 200 countries in the world today; there are police officers and armed forces. You know why? The world is not safe! There is crime everywhere! People are being robbed and killed every day. People are fighting every day. People are committing crimes every day. Our world is no longer safe. There are accidents every day. Things are turning upside down. There are riots and demonstrations every day. Like I said earlier, I am reaching you from Nigeria. If you live in Nigeria or have been following the news lately, you should know the latest happenings. Not just in the north or south but everywhere-all over Nigeria. In the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria there is crisis-in all 36 states of the nation including the Federal Capital Territory. Our world is no longer safe! But how did it all begin?

If you don’t know the root of a problem, you can’t really solve it. If you don’t know the source of something, you can’t stop it. Doctors advise us that we shouldn’t just patronize chemists if we notice symptoms in our bodies. If one has headache for instance, they shouldn’t just buy any drug. For lasting solutions, the hospital should be visited so that doctors can run tests and discover the root cause of whatever symptoms a person might be having. Symptoms of headache are not necessarily as a result of malaria. There could be several other causes. So if we want a lasting solution, we must get to the root of problems. Some people take panadol and headache subsides temporarily only to resurface later. Why? Because the root of the ailment has not been dealt with! How can you solve a problem if you don’t know its root? We are talking about how to be safe in an unsafe world but if we don’t know the reason why the world is not safe, then we will not be able to find solutions to our problems. We cannot be safe if we don’t know the source of chaos in our world.

Genesis chapter 3 verse 1 shows us the source of the problem. Everything was okay in the world until something happened. Let’s read Genesis 3, “Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field” The word subtil or subtle means crafty. The word translated subtil is the Hebrew word aruwm which means cunning or crafty. Notice that the Bible does not talk about a serpent but the serpent. Genesis 3:1, “Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?”    This verse does not refer to snakes or serpents that cannot talk. It refers to a particular serpent that could talk. This serpent in question spoke to the woman asking whether she could not eat any fruit from the garden. Let’s read on. Genesis 3:2-5, “And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.” It was from this chapter that things went wrong in the world. From the moment the serpent was introduced into the Garden of Eden there was no more peace in the world. Now, let’s find out what this serpent really was. Let’s find out what kind of serpent this was that could talk. To do that, let’s search for the word serpent in the Bible. The word serpent appears 36 times in the King James Version of the Bible. It appears 4 times in the book of Revelation-the last book of the Bible. And all 4 times it refers to the same person. Let’s read Revelation 12:9, “And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.” I won’t go into too much detail now, but if you read the entire chapter (Revelation 12) you will find out that there was war in heaven. Wherever this serpent was found, there was chaos. Things went wrong. The place was no longer safe. When the war took place in heaven, Angel Michael defeated the serpent. And so the serpent also called the devil (you must have heard that name before) also called Satan the one that deceives the whole world, he was cast out of heaven into the earth. That was the day that the problem of the earth began! The serpent! This was the same serpent that came to the Garden of Eden after being cast out of heaven and deceived Adam and Eve and made them sin against God and brought chaos  into the world. That’s how the world became an unsafe place! Wherever the dragon, the serpent, the devil or satan is found, that place is no longer safe. Let’s read Revelation 12:9 again, ““And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent…” Genesis 3:1 says, “Now the serpent” Revelation 12:9 says, “that old serpent” So there was a particular serpent that was there from the olden days. And that old serpent that could talk was not an ordinary snake. It was the devil! It was Satan! In Revelation 20:2 the Bible reads, “And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years” This shows us what will happen to the devil later on. He will be bound and cast into the bottomless pit for 1,000 years. And for those 1,000 years that the devil will be cast into the bottomless pit, there will be peace and safety on the earth! For the purpose of today’s discussion, we have established that our world is not really safe. You don’t need a prophet to tell you that. We have also found out why our world is no longer safe—because there is an old serpent that has been cast out into this world. And that serpent deceives the whole world.

Did you know that it was the serpent that led to the first murder on the earth? Let’s read from Genesis chapter 4, “And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.” This means that Adam had intercourse with his wife Eve and she gave birth to her first son named Cain. Verse 2, “And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.” Eve gave birth to her second son and his name was Abel. Cain and Abel were farmers. Of course! What else could they have done in those days? While Cain practiced crop cultivation, Abel was into animal husbandry. Verses 3-5, “And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD. And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering: But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.”    The Hebrew word translated wroth here is charah which means to glow or grow warm, to blaze up, to be angry, jealousy… Cain became jealous because God accepted the offering of his younger brother Abel. Verses 6-8, “And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him. And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.” Eventually, Cain killed his brother! He killed him! There were only two boys on the earth. They had the same father and mother. Cain and Abel were the first two people to ever be brothers on the earth. Yet the elder brother killed his younger brother! So, you see, killing did not start yesterday! It has been on for thousands of years. Why? That serpent that came into the Garden of Eden brought deception into the world. Cain got jealous and killed his brother. Imagine! It was not an enemy that killed Abel, it was his own brother. It was not a witch that killed Abel. It was his elder brother. His own blood! They were the first two people to be called brothers. They were the first two people to be breastfed by their mother. They were not from a polygamous family. They had one father and one mother. There are an estimated 7.7 billion people in the world today. But as far back as when there were only 4 people alive, Cain still killed his brother. So, killing didn’t start yesterday. It has been there from the beginning of brotherhood.

Now let me show you why I believe the serpent was involved in the murder of Abel. According to Revelation 12:9 that we read earlier, the serpent deceives the whole world. That means he must have deceived Cain. He must have suggested to Cain that the solution to his jealousy problem was to kill his brother! It was not sickness that killed Abel. It was his brother! Let’s refer to John chapter 10. It is time to hear from Jesus Christ the Son of the Living God. John 10:10, “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” Jesus is talking about a particular thief here. Wherever this thief comes there must be stealing, there must be killing and there must be destruction. If you refer back to Genesis chapter 4 there was killing. So we know that the thief came! Who is this thief? It is the same serpent we have been talking about. He can have human agents but he is the one behind stealing, killing and destruction. His three-fold agenda are to steal, kill and destroy. Anywhere you see stealing or theft on the earth, the devil is behind it. If you see a human doing it, the devil deceived the person in question. Whenever you see killing, the devil is also behind it. He has deceived somebody to kill another. Wherever you see destruction of lives and property, that old serpent the devil is behind it! His mission is to steal, kill and destroy. So is our world really safe? No! As long as the devil is on this earth, it is not safe!

Let me take you to the last two chapters of the Bible; the other chapters where we have perfect peace on the earth. I will show you why there will be perfect peace on the earth once again. In the book of Revelation an angel was sent to show John some of the things that happened in the past and some things that will happen in the future. Revelation chapter 21 is the penultimate chapter of the Bible. It is the second to the last chapter. Revelation 21:1 reads, “And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.” If you read the entire chapter you will see that everything changed for the better. Why? The devil had been removed from the world! He was initially cast into the bottomless pit and later into hell. As long as the devil is in this world, the place is not safe. He will keep deceiving people. So Revelation 21 and 22 are also perfect chapters of the Bible because they tell of how God will recreate the world and the devil will no longer be in the world. So we have seen that our world is not safe. Why? Because there is an old serpent that deceives the whole world! And his duty, as we saw from John chapter 10 verse 10, is to steal, kill and destroy. His names, as we saw from Revelation chapter 12 verse 9 are: the great dragon, the old serpent, the devil and satan. His strategy is to deceive the whole world. So if you see stealing, killing and destruction anywhere in the world, you know who is behind it!

I want to take us back to our topic: how to be safe in an unsafe world. Our duty is not to make the world safe. We have seen from the book of Revelation that eventually the world will be safe again because the devil will be cast out of this world and then God will create a new heaven and a new earth. Until then, the world will not be safe. But there is good news! I’m not here to spread bad news. I’m here to bring good news. The good news is this: even though the world is not safe; you can still be safe! That’s what we will be discussing in the rest of this series. I hope you enjoyed this introduction. Please don’t miss any part of the remainder of the series. We will be talking about how to be safe from all kinds of evils that make our world unsafe. As we round off today, please leave your comments in the comment box.   I want to round off by reading from 1 John 5:19, “And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.”The whole world lies in wickedness. Whether you are in the third world countries or in the developed nations; wherever you are: the whole world lies in wickedness. The world is not safe. But the good news is that you can be safe in this unsafe world. Please leave your comments and questions and I will see you in part 2.
